St Christopher is the patron saint of travel and travellers, and he is known for offering child Christ a ride over a river. In medieval London, statues of him were placed at the entrances of houses and by bridges, so that he could protect all travellers on their journeys. This sculpture was found in a Tudor wall on the site of Newgate Prison in 1903.
