Baron Jan August Hendrik Leys was a Belgian painter and printmaker. He was a leader in the Romantic school in Belgian art, who became a pioneer of the realist movement in Belgium. His paintings and portraits earnt him a reputation amongst Europe, and his style influenced many artists both in and outside of his home country of Belgium. He was born in Antwerp, son of a printer who specialised in religious images printed on old copper plates. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, first studying the antique and moving on to life. From the start of his career Leys painted history, often collaborated with Romantic painter Gustaf Wappers. He eventually began creating works for clientele from Germany, France, England and Russia, gaining considerable reputation at home and abroad. He became a knight in the French Legion of Honour and was awarded the Order of St Michael by the king of Bavaria. Leys died in 1869 in an untimely fashion in Antwerp.
